2026 Invoicing & Time Tracking Report: Top Platforms Ranked for Independent Professionals & Small Teams
Choosing invoicing and time tracking software is one of those decisions that sounds simple until you start comparing options. Every platform does some of the same things, but the differences — what's included, what costs extra, what's missing entirely — matter a lot when you're running a business on your own or with a small team.
We put together this comparison because we get asked "how is Harpoon different from X?" all the time. Rather than dodge the question, we wanted to lay it all out honestly — what we do well, where competitors have strengths, and where no platform is perfect. We compared Harpoon, FreshBooks, Harvest, Toggl Track, and HoneyBook across nine categories.
Full disclosure: we make Harpoon, so take our perspective with that in mind. We've tried to be fair, but you should always try the tools yourself before deciding.

What Stands Out
- Toggl Track is hard to beat for pure time tracking. If detailed time analytics and reporting are the most important thing to you, Toggl is the leader in this space. The tradeoff is that you'll need separate tools for invoicing, expenses, and everything else.
- FreshBooks has the strongest invoicing and payment processing. It supports more payment methods out of the box than any other platform here, and the invoicing automation (reminders, recurring invoices, late fees) is more mature. If getting paid fast is your top priority, FreshBooks is worth a hard look.
- FreshBooks, Harvest, and Toggl Track have much larger integration ecosystems than Harpoon or HoneyBook. If your workflow depends on connecting to tools like Jira, Asana, or QuickBooks, check that your integrations are supported before choosing.
- Revenue forecasting is still rare. Harpoon is the only platform in this comparison that lets you set revenue goals and track projected income against them in real time. If knowing whether you're on pace to hit your financial targets matters to you, this is a feature worth trying.
- AI assistant integration is new territory. Harpoon's MCP integration lets you log time, create invoices, and manage projects through conversation with AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT. No other platform here offers this depth of AI access — though this is a fast-moving space and that could change.
- Pricing adds up differently depending on team size. For solo professionals, Harpoon and Toggl Track are the cheapest starting points at $9/month. For small teams, per-user pricing (Harvest, Toggl) can get expensive quickly — Harpoon's flat-rate Studio plan ($39/month for up to 8 users) is worth comparing.
Platform Overviews
Harpoon — An all-in-one time tracking, invoicing, and business planning platform built for freelancers, agencies, and small teams. Where Harpoon stands out is revenue goal tracking and a new AI assistant integration via MCP. Where it's thinner is integrations — the ecosystem is smaller than FreshBooks or Toggl Track, and payment processing is limited to Stripe. Plans start at $9/month.
FreshBooks — One of the most established invoicing platforms for small businesses. FreshBooks has a polished interface, strong payment processing with multiple methods, and a large app ecosystem. It handles time tracking and expenses too, though neither is as deep as a dedicated tool. Best for professionals who prioritize invoicing and getting paid quickly.
Harvest — A mature time tracking and invoicing tool popular with agencies and consulting firms. Harvest has solid timesheets, project budgets with alerts, and good integrations with project management tools. Invoicing is straightforward — you can generate invoices directly from tracked time. It doesn't offer revenue forecasting or AI features.
Toggl Track — Widely regarded as the best pure time tracking tool available. Intuitive interface, powerful reporting, excellent browser extension. Ideal if detailed time analytics are your priority. The tradeoff is significant: no invoicing, no expense tracking, no AI integration. You'll need to pair it with other tools.
HoneyBook — A client management platform that bundles proposals, contracts, invoicing, and scheduling into one workflow. Popular with creative professionals — photographers, designers, event planners — who manage the full client lifecycle. Time tracking and project budgeting are basic compared to dedicated tools.
Methodology
This comparison was put together by the Harpoon team in February 2026. We gathered feature information from each platform's public documentation, pricing pages, and product updates. Pricing reflects published rates as of the report date.
We tried to be fair, but we're obviously biased — we built one of the products in this comparison. We'd encourage you to try free trials of any platform that looks promising and decide for yourself.
